| The Challengers | | | | | The little brother to Union Pacific's 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, Challengers were the second largest steam locomotive ever built. Designed to pull heavy freights at speed up steep grades without helpers, these engines were perfectly suited to operation on the Clinchfield. | The No. 1 | | | | | The Clinchfield No.1 is a real story. Originally built in the late 1800's, sold, abandoned, re-purchased, sold again, abandoned again, and re-purchased one more time, she now resides at the B&O Museum in Maryland. If you get the chance, go and see her! Preserved in her final livery, the No. 1 is about the most beautiful engineyou'll ever see. No photos here, but you can see the ticket I used to ride her before she retired on our Gallery page.
